New York State citizens recently beat back attempts by voting machine vendors to weaken our state laws regarding software disclosure. Now Senate bill S1487, sponsored by Sen. Diane Feinstein, threatens to overrule these strong state laws and make secret vote counting the law of the land.

S1487 takes control of elections out of local and state hands and gives it to the federal government. There has been no national or Congressional debate, and no Congressional hearings at which citizens can speak. There has been no request for from citizens or local or state governments to shift control of our elections to the federal government.

S1487 would profoundly alter the way elections are conducted in the United States, taking control away from the states and putting it in the hands of a failed federal agency, the EAC. S1487 will make it forever impossible for review of software and ballot programming files, and overrule the strong state protections we've fought for in New York State.

We must not let this happen. S1487 may be voted on very soon and you must act now.

It's vital for all New Yorkers who care about keeping our elections in public hands to call, fax or write Senators Clinton and Schumer today and tell them they must not support S1487!
